Hammocks Beach Visitors Center
Location: Swansboro, NC
Located near Swansboro on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, Hammock’s Beach State Park is a small island, located about 15 minutes from the mainland via ferry. Site planning and construction drawings were generated for a new visitor’s center on the mainland and bath house complex on the island itself. The visitor’s center includes a meandering drive leading to a parking facility adjacent to the center. A large picnic shelter, elevated deck, passenger shelter, new ferry dock as well as ADA accessibility are incorporated into the site design. Stormwater run-off is captured and treated by a series of rain gardens know as BMP, or Best Management Practices, prior to infiltration into the local water table. Indigenous plants are used in landscaping the site and stormwater BMP to provide a continuation of the native vegetation found on site.
The bath house complex on the island is designed to mimic the ages old type of structure found along coastal North Carolina and provides facilities for day visitors and campers alike. A boardwalk provides ADA accessibility to the bath house and several picnic shelters.
